Here are some great GOD FREE toasts brought to you by the HUMANISTS SOCIETY OF CANADA
Samples of Humanist Graces
Before meals and feasts:
We are thankful for this food and all these good things of life. We recognize they come to us through the efforts of our brothers and sisters the world over. What we desire for ourselves, we wish for all. To this end, we take our share of the world’s work and the world’s struggles.
-- J.S. Woodsworth, pacifist, and first leader of the CCF (precursor to the NDP)
May this food restore our strength, giving new energy to tired limbs,
And new thoughts to weary minds.
May this drink restore our hearts, giving new vision to dry eyes,
And new warmth to cold hearts.
And once refreshed, may we share this new pleasure with you,
Our families and friends.
-- based on a traditional Celtic blessing
Now good digestion wait on appetite, and health on both.
-- Shakespeare, Macbeth , III, 4
Good company, good wine, good welcome can make good people.
-- Shakespeare, Henry VII
Dear God, we paid for all this ourselves, so thanks for nothing...
-- Bart Simpson (of the cartoon series, The Simpsons)
Let us think thrice while we are gathering here for this meal.
First, let us think of the people we are with today,
And make the most of the pleasure of sharing food and drink together.
Then, let us think of the people who made the food and drink and brought it to us,
Who serve us and wait on us, and who clear up and clean up after us.
Finally, let us think of all the people all over the world,
Members with us in the human family, who will not have a meal today.
-- Nicolas Walter
We thank those who produced it,
And those who transported it.
We thank those who prepared it,
And those who serve it.
Let us now sit down and enjoy it.
-- Ralph Ison
For what we are about to receive, let us be thankful and ever mindful of those less fortunate than ourselves.
-- David Read
With what we are about to receive, may we be ever mindful of the needs of others.
-- Alan Stuart
